ROUND TABLES
Round Table
“The Post-secular dialogues: Mount Athos and practical implementation of traditions”
October 5, 2012 (9:00-13:30)
Karphatos Hall
The crisis of neo-European rationalism, with its absolute linear progress and faith in the unlimited power of science, has served to remind mankind of the relevance of transcendental exploration as a unique well-spring of any human religion or culture. Religious revival, as an irrational reaction to total rationalism, with its cult of science and technology, is developing in the context of a desecularized world experiencing a values vacuum and a break with the pre-eminence of religious traditions. This, in turn, serves as the source of the natural difficulties encountered by modern man in terms of communication, the resurrection of vibrant religious life, and, as a consequence – the mass dissemination of pop-religion superstitions and substitutes.

“The Byzantine heritage and its’ significance for European Civilization”
October 5, 2012 (15:00-19:00)
Hall “Karphatos”
As a distinct cultural-historical type, the Eastern-Roman (or Byzantine) civilization is poorly-known and undervalued by the global community. Byzantium represents an untapped source of civilization singularity that should be utilized by all of mankind. The invaluable cultural legacy of Byzantium is its principle of promoting polyethnicity while preserving confessional and national unity, the legendary “symphony of powers,” traditionalism as an underlying principle of civilizational identity, and sacred sources of art as a new civilization resource that should be reintroduced to the international-dialogue community.

“Present-day migration: the end of tolerance?”
October 5, 2012 (11:30-19:00)
Hall “TV Room”
One of the factors behind the global instability in the emerging world order is the mass migration from poor countries and conflict zones, leading to a major change in the ethno-religious composition of the population in host countries, intensifying inter-civilizational tension and exacerbating the crime situation. The apparent spontaneity of immigration challenges, “breaking down” centuries-old collective civilizational identities and diluting their cultural heritage – is the painful consequence of the financial and technological expansion of neo-classical globalization and the current practice of global “governance through chaos”.
The urgent need for a humane and socio-cultural adjustment in migration processes requires new approaches to the management of demographic resources within the broader context of the dialogue between world civilization systems, while identifying the experience of various countries in the efficient management of migration problems. Effective management of migration processes is based on constant monitoring of the balance of interests of the indigenous population and migrants; prioritizing the preservation of national cultural values; improving the legal framework; and increasing the responsibility of employers to meet the social and cultural needs of imported labor.
As part of the inter-civilizational dialogue, it would be productive to discuss both the strengths and the shortcomings of the existing model for adapting the cultural otherness of migrants and the civilizational matrix of the host country: assimilation, hybridization, autonomy (within the ethno-cultural and ethno-religious enclaves of the diaspora) and multiculturalism.
Main vectors of discussion:
· The challenge of migration as an unavoidable consequence of globalization
· Emigration and immigration: benefits and risks
· Group and individual identities and integration. The boundaries of necessary integration
· Integration in practice: success or crisis of existing models?
· The state of national legislation and international regulation of migration processes
· New models for inter-cultural cooperation in modern multicultural society
· The role of religions in the adaptation and integration of migrants

“Culture Dialogue Schools”
October 5, 2012 (15:00-19:00)
Leros Hall
In the process of acquiring and mastering the skills of conducting a dialogue among different cultures, it is our opinion that the decisive role belongs to educational institutions and the practical technologies they employ. A poly-cultural education can become one of the most important instruments in helping a person to proceed from abstract, and quite often, simply demagogic statements to practical implementation of fresh ideas. The objective or goal of poly-cultural education is not only to create a favorable climate for coexistence, i.e., for different cultures to live together side by side, but also to make the maximum use of this diversity for the wellbeing of the individual and society.

“Legacy of J.C. Kapur and problems of contemporary futurology”
October 6, 2012 (15:00-19:00)
Hall “TV Room”
The new philosophy of humanistic world order developed by Jagdish C. Kapur has served as the basis of the activities conducted by the World Public Forum “Dialogue of Civilizations.” Characteristic of this cultural-philosophical concept formulated by the distinguished Indian thinker is the rejection of the consumerism-driven devaluation of the sacred value of human life and the total standardization of distinct cultures under the onslaught of unipolar capitalist globalization. With great enthusiasm, deeply and convincingly, he left a legacy of the humanistic principles of a multipolar world order as a God-given concert to civilizations destined for cooperation as opposed to hostility. J. Kapur placed particular emphasis on the assertion of fundamental human values and the formulation of socio-economic principles for a new life philosophy.

“Outcome and Outlook for Regional Integration throughout the Eurasian Space”
October 6, 2012 (15:00-19:00)
Olympic Hall
The crisis of 2008 demonstrated the need for coordinated action and joint efforts to prevent and minimize the consequences of crisis phenomena. At the same time, the complexity and connectivity of the socio-economic landscape attests to the need for new formats of institutional rapprochement at both the regional and global level.
In addition to the intensification of previously-established regional economic associations, events since 2010 have included development of the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, the fostering of relations within the EAEC framework, and the formation of a free trade zone between China and ASEAN. CIS member states have also concluded the formation of a multilateral free trade zone. The implementation of integration projects in Latin America continues. Yet, at this very time, the entire world is monitoring the events unfolding in the Eurozone with acute anxiety.
Integrational processes serve as cornerstones in the formation of regional zones of economic stability, envisioning not merely the free flow of goods, services, capital and labor resources, but also harmonization of the parameters of the macroeconomic policy and financial systems of Customs Union member states.
The creation of regional zones of economic stability enhances the overall strength of the global economy, currently faced with a worsening crisis. The likely collapse of the global financial system lends projects involving regional economic integration critical significance in terms of ensuring the stable development of the global economy.
Main vectors of discussion:
· Regional integrational processes in the context of crisis: the outlook for stability
· Integrational associations throughout the Eurasian space in the search for common ground and mechanisms of development
· From the Customs Union to the Common Economic Space and onwards onto a Eurasian Economic Union: a roadmap

“Formation of the new network post-society: new civilization challenges”
October 6, 2012 (15:00-19:00)
Kassos Hall
It would be no exaggeration to assert that digital mass media constitutes the fundamental cultural institution of the global e-civilization. The avant-garde technologies at its disposal, furnished by the “Digital Revolution,” have geometrically increased the socio-communicative potential of the new media, bolstering its informational capacity. More and more, the mass media is emerging as the factor directly responsible for the construction of social reality. In need of similar strengthening, therefore, is the social responsibility of national media outlets capable of achieving a national consensus in the formulation of original globalization algorithms capable of withstanding the temptation to take the easy path of PR-technology.
