Archaeological Background of the Ovidian Exile

Last Updated on , 30 November -0001 00:00

Repeated rebuilding activities in this area, even in ancient times, as well as the modern city placed on the ancient town location did not permit conservation of other public or civilian buildings belonging to the envisaged period.

Much more archaeological information about the cultural and spiritual level of Tomitan inhabitants living at Ovid’s time in the 1st cent. A.D. is offered by the multitude of objects rescued from the ancient graveyards outside the walls. Next to ceramics, glassware, objects made of different materials manufactured by local craftsmen, a large number of objects were discovered, imported from major Roman production centers having trade relations with Tomis. Ancient merchants and sailors, who appreciated the harbor favorable position, have at that time carried to these shores a large variety of wares, some of which can at present be admired in the National History and Archaeology Museum collections.
