Marietta Stepanyants (Russia), Director, Centre for Oriental Philosophy Studies, Institute of Philosophy, RAS
Prof. Marietta Stepanyants was born in Moscow. She graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations, Faculty of Oriental Studies in 1959. Since 1959 has been working at the Institute of Philosophy, USSR Academy of sciences (now Russian Academy of Sciences) where she received her degrees: Candidate of sciences in 1963 and Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1974.
M. Stepanyants has been the Director of the Center of the Oriental Philosophies’ Studies at the Institute of Philosophy since 1980. She got her Professorship in 1983 at the Diplomatic Academy, USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were she was teaching in 1980 - 1994. She is the Founder and the Head of the Chair of Eastern Philosophy and Political Thought at the State University of Humanities, Moscow (since 1996). Since 2008 she is the Chairholder of UNESCO chair “Philosophy in the dialogue of Cultures”.
M.Stepanyants’ writings were published in about 30 countries. She initiated the establishment of two Academic series of which she is the editor-in-chief: “History of Eastern Philosophies” and “Comparative Philosophy”.
For outstanding academic achievements Prof. M. Stepanyants got awards: “Honored Scholar of the Russian Federation” issued by the decree of the President of the Russian Federation (2002); “Plehanov’s Award” of the Russian Academy of Sciences (2006). She is a recipient of the “Award of the President of the Russian Federation for directing a leading school in humanities” (2006-2007, 2008-2009 years). In 2010 she was awarded with the Silver Medal “For Outstanding Contribution in the Development of Philosophy”.
Prof. M.Stepanyants directed many international conferences including “East & West Philosophers’ Conferences” in Honolulu (1995, 2000). Since 2003 she has been a member of the Executive Committee, World Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP). In 2008 she was elected as the 1st Vice-president of FISP for the next 5 years.
